Wardrobe selections for your denver newborn or maternity session

Planning your session

If you’d ask me what most influences the quality of an image aside from light?

Ask me the one of the biggest things my clients can do to impact the quality of their images?

Wardrobe. 100%. Every time.

Outfit selection is such an important element of building a beautiful, impactful images. Vibrant colors while outdoors and light neutrals indoors is typically my personal approach.

I love mountainside purples and oranges with velvety and chunky textures while indoors with grays, blues and neutrals just make my heart happy.  Some locations compliment different colors based on the time of year. The winters at Wash Park totally beckon red, purple and all sorts of warm colors as the grass turns yellow. The images below was captured just before the end of the year

My two cents

I always prefer color simplicity with texture over plaids, busy designs or shirts with words or phrases. Yes, even for boys, this includes the branding on Dad’s shirt too!

Fun accents like a little bolero jacket, hat or scarf go SUCH a long way. You won’t regret investing a little time and money in accessories and styling and so long as we can work around tags, (shhhhh!!!) no investment required, items may be able to be returned.

I LOVE suspenders on boys. Also- PLEASE believe they will need adjustment every three seconds as one or both sides fall down. Lol.

I typically prefer the little ones barefoot, if possible, especially in studio. They’re often sitting facing the camera and the bottom of shoes or socks are photographed more than the actual shoe. Bare piggies, please! :) Heck, I prefer the whole family that way if we’re inside. :)

I just love pampering my mommas. Outfit coordination is hard work. I have resources to help if it resonates.

The biggest thing I did to boost my confidence in front of the camera was to commission a makeup artist and hair stylist. She made me feel like a goddess for my branding photos you see on site. Her hair and makeup skills made me wonder why I hadn’t commissioned her sooner. I HIGHLY recommend you do more than frantically plan outfits for the entire family - take the time to pamper yourself for these images and commission a professional to style your hair and makeup. You’ll be so thankful you did!!

I typically lean toward timeless classic while photographing newborns and fully support on trend styling during maternity sessions.

This MAY be controversial - I’d highly recommend wearing a dress for both of your outdoor maternity session outfits. if you’re investing time, money and effort to take maternity portraits, honor yourself ams this special time - find a killer gown! Long and flowing for the win! My favorite dress vendors found here.

I’m thrilled to offer additional files or session concessions if dresses are donated to JJP.
